It was a complete waste of time, and if you don’t want to throw away half of your own day searching for a free Joomla 1.5 template, then this is all you need to know; there are none. Actually, there aren’t many good paid templates that are 1.5 compatible either. The best one I could find is Weblogic from Joomlashack (which looks great in the blog layout) demonstrated below;

It does look very ‘newsy’, but it’s flexible enough to be used for a portal or blog, and it comes in 5 different colors. It represents excellent value for $39.95. This easily the best 1.5 Joomla Template around. The only reason you might not buy it is that because it’s one of the only good 1.5 templates on the market, and therefore every man and his dog will probably use it.

If you are determined to find a Free Joomla 1.5 Template read on…

At the end of last year, the Joomla developers ran a Joomla 1.5 Template Competition. I’m not sure if they’ve announced a winner, but the last time I looked (which was this morning) JA Purity by JoomlArt was winning by a mile - it is a nice template, the only problem is that once you install it you can’t select it from the administrator backend - I’ve tried this a few times, and double checked my download link and I still get “template not found” error message…

Still, might be worth a try (and the problem might have been fixed by the time I make this post)… and it does seem to be working for everyone else.

RedEvo_Aphelion by Red Evolution (pictured below) has the second most votes, but it’s a pretty ordinary attempt. It’s clean looking and easy to navigate, but it’s not going to blow anyone’s socks off, but remember it is free - you can download it here

Spend a bit more time trawling the web for “Joomla 1.5 Templates”, and you’ll no doubt stumble accross Site Ground- nearly all their templates look the same. This one (I’m not sure what it’s called) is the pick of the bunch - only because it’s a good blank canvas to start with. Spend a bit of time on the header you could make a decent looking site out in less than half an hour. HINT: if you are looking for a header graphic, try Free Web Page Headers.

Even less impressive is Joomla 24 - they’ve got 93 Free templates listed and ALL of them are rubbish. In fact, only about 25% of them are 1.5 compatible and most of those are listings from Siteground. GROAN.

Best of Joomla have a few more of the contest entries listed, I initially missed this entry on the competition forum;

There’s a few odd things going on here. The graphic is terrible and there’s too many colours happening at once -but with a little refinement (a new header graphic and a bit of time tweaking the CSS) and you’d be left with a really nice looking template (demo / download via Best of Joomla).

CMS Lounge have a couple of completely Free 1.5 Joomla templates available….

This one would probably look okay if you sniff enough paint thinner. If you want to give that a go, you can download it for free here.

Higher Grounds (pictured below) also by CMS Lounge might keep you out of trouble if are running a simple blog with your Joomla installation (download here).

… and that’s about it for Free Joomla 1.5 Templates (at least that’s all I could find). If you know of any great 1.5 templates that are free to use (and work), please post links in the comments section below.

Premium Jooma 1.5 Templates

After looking at all of my available options, I thought stuff it, I’m going to actually have to buy a template. This normally isn’t a bad option (especially when you can find exactly what you’re after). I had a look on Template Monster and even they appear to only have 4 x 1.5 compatible Joomla Templates - they all stink and two of them are themed around Valentines Day (i.e. about as useful as lips on a chicken).

Joomla Capital have a few nice designs, they are reasonably priced, and unlike other sites ALL of their templates are Joomla 1.5 compatible. Yay!

JC Rome (pictured below) is probably the pick of the bunch (Demo)

And that’s about it. The only other option you have is to buy an old 1.0 template and get someone on Rentacoder to convert it for you. Either that or you could learn how to do it yourself. There’s an excellent article here - (courtesy of Compass Designs) which explains how you can create a blank template, how to usse CSS to create a tableless layout and provides a few tips on working with Joomla 1.5 Template features. If you are going to give this a go, then I’d suggest downloading this blank skeleton template (registration required) which should give you a few basic foundations to work with.

Axialis have some interesting Web 2.0 icon sets (some which are free to download) which typify features of a Web 2.0 site - these kits provide a way for user to create large icons for standard website features like RSS feed links. These icons and “badges” are also an excellent match for the larger font sizes which are typically part of a stunning web 2.0 aesthetic.

Clearly defined heading areas, large but bold and simple logos, large text and use of innovations like tag clouds are all features that most people would associated with Web 2.0. - Surprisingly, we started looking around for some truly unique Web 2.0 Templates so far we’ve been sorely dissapointed. There are a few good web 2.0 templates over at Joomla Shack - the Aqualine Reloaded Template, the Weblogic Template Set and Element templates are especially nice, but they only cater to Joomla users…. Template Monster seem to have lumped a whole bunch of stuff into their web 2.0 category - most of them are also featured in business categories and else where on the site. Even the templates that do look “web 2.0″ don’t really feature icons or font choices that you’d associate with cutting edge web 2.0 design. Out of more than 100 so called “web 2.0 templates“, these are the pick of the bunch:

Setting up your own Joomla band website might sound complicated, but it’s not. Once you have your domain and hosting sorted (refer to the previous post), you can easily find someone on Rentacoder to set up your Joomla site for you. The great thing about a Joomla site is that you can maintain a lot of the content yourself - you can even setup polls, login forms, news sections, who’s online, and much more. It’s very easy to uuse and it’s always good to get your visitors involved in your website. The more you can get them involved, the better off your band will be in the long run as for as getting your music heard. If you opt for a flash website (which is great if you want to brand your website) you might run into problems with updating your content over time, or as your band gains popularity. 1) Decide on a band name. This band name generator is lots fun - I’ve decided on ‘Vagina Wrath Of The Drastic Lunch‘, but I’m sure you can find something with more marketing nous….

2) Register your domain with Moniker - vaginawrathofthedrasticlunch.com (or whatever you’ve decided to call your band). Set up your name servers to point to your new host… (Moniker support can help you out with this - just email support@moniker.com after you setup your account).

4) Post a job on Rentacoder - post a bid request and find someone to put your website together on the cheap. Find one that suits your style, and then upload the zip file package to the coder who is working on your website (step 4). Thinking about creating your own financial services website? Have you thought about doing it yourself? Maybe you’ve requested quotes from a web designers who are trying to charge you through the nose for a basic site. Maybe you’re that designer and you’re trying to make a quick buck out of Finance Company… whatever the circumstance is, you’ve obviously found this article because you’re looking to make a Financial Services website. If this is the case, the information below is going to be useful, if not, you should leave, click on my ads, or simply stand back in awe.

Step 1 - Getting Started

Decide what you want your website to do? Is it just a brochure site with information about your company or does it actually have to do something fancy? (If it’s the later, read on, otherwise jump to step 2).

Step 2 - Adding ‘Fancy Stuff’ to your website

I’m obviously not in finance, but for the sake of the argument, lets pretend that I want to have stock market ticker on my website to give it a little extra authority. The stock market looks fancy, and people will trust you if they can see your provide up to date information on your website. I did a quick search and found this excellent ‘Market Movers’ Stock Ticker on Quote Media.

For a small fee (and a few minutes of your time adding a bit of Javascript to your page) you can seamlessly integrate dynamic information like this with your existing content. There are a number companies like Quote Media, it pays to shop around. There are plenty of free scripts around, but finding a reliable data feed is sometimes a problem.

Right now you’re probably thinking, “hang on, but I don’t have a website yet”. Sometimes it’s easiest to do things the wrong way round, I’ll explain more as we go along…

To give another example, I have also decided that I want to add a mortgage calculator to my website. You could pay a few thousand dollars to get someone to build one of these for you, or you could just Google ‘free mortgage calculator scripts‘ - in under 5 minutes, I found this one.

You can download it, and run it on just about any Apache Server (if you don’t know what that is don’t worry). You can find just about any you might need for your new finance website by searching on Google. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel (or in this case the humble mortgage calculator) - work with existing resources, you’ll save time and bucket loads of cash.

Back to Step 1 - decide what you want your website to do, and then do a Google Search. Need a Crude Oil Invoicing Estimator, search for it. Chances are someone has built one before. Once you’ve found all the resources you want to include on your website, make a list of them in a notepad file or spreadsheet. Include the website address and any notes about how you might need the components modified.

Step 3 - Organise the content for your site

Actually, you don’t want to do that - you’re a big finance guy and organizing information about your company is grunt work? Get your assistant to do it. Actually, you may as well just stop now and get your assistant to manage building your entire website. If they stuff it up you can easily fire them and hire someone who can read instructions.

In one word document gather all the information about your company, you services, contact info, etc. Create one page for each page of your website. Also include notes about functionality. For example, “on this page, a visitor should be able to request a quote for a home loan. The following information is required, bla bla bla and the quote request should go through to our sales department”, etc.

Step 4 - Choose a look and feel for your website

Again, you don’t need to hire a fancy designer, just find a template that’s a good fit for your company and then get Template Tuners to modify it. They can add your business logo and make changes to images or layout on most Template Monster Templates - pump your order through and you should have your template (complete with changes) in under a few days.

STEP 5 - Bring it all together

(In as few words as possible) - If you have a domain and hosting already skip the next sentence. If you don’t have a domain find one using Picky Domains and then register it at Moniker - if you have an existing host, dump them and get an account with Pair (simply set your nameservers at Moniker to use the Pair nameservers and then add your domain there in the control panel). Once you’ve got your domain and hosting set up, post a job on Rentacoder - click on Request Bids - set the budget for about $200 - zip your files up (word document, template, and features list - Steps 2,3,4) - In bid request description box write something like “I want someone to build my website. Each page in my word document is a page of my site, I’ve got a template and need the features listed in the notepad (or spreadsheet) implemented on the indicated pages. The website must be fully functional, and all the scripts tested and you’ll have to set up our email, and upload the site to our server”.

Select a Coder who has completed more than 5 jobs and has a rating of 9.5 of above (have a look at their profile to see feedback from previous buyers). Escrow the money (you don’t have to pay them until the work is complete and you are 100% satisfied), and then sit back and watch your website come together.

Pretty easy huh? Now you know why everyone wants to be a web designer.

There is simply no better way for many millions of buyers and sellers to find houses and properties then online. You might have noticed that there are very few realty agents who haven’t made the shift to the online world - it’s the perfect way to manage listings and promote other service. People from all over the world can discover listings in all parts fo the world, and they’ll also have access to information about your business and agent profiles. A realty website is like a business card on steroids - actually, that’ not a fair comparison. A website is, in the modern age the most valuable tool any real estate business can have (apart from maybe it’s staff). In short, if you’re a realty business and you don’t have a website yet - you need to act now.

If you’re wondering how you can build your website, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1) Don’t get somebody local to build your website from the ground up (unless you have an exceptionally talented in house IT person who can put your website together quickly). There are a number of different real estate website packages that are easy to install and set up. Some popular scripts, which will run on most Apache servers include:

2) If you’re thinking “I don’t know a thing about setting up a script” then relax. Create a job on Rentacoder and get somebody else to do it for you. It will cost about $20 for someone to install the script for you. Create an account, click on ‘request bids’ and then follow the steps. If you haven’t used Rentacoder before you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to outsource work to all parts of the world. Romanian and Russian Federation coders are usually the best… that’s a massive sweeping generalisation, take it or leave it. Indian and Pakistani coders might be cheap, but you’ll soon find out why.

3) Web hosting - I’ve been working on websites for the past 10 years. I’ve had so many bad hosting experiences that when you have a good one, you really take notice. PAIR are exceptionally good value. They really are world class and their support is great - they don’t make any absurd promises, but they do ALWAYS reply in a timely fashion. Their hardware and software is up to date and you don’t really need to know any more - PAIR is, in my opinion, the best web host around.

4) Select a template from Template Monster and then get Template Tuners to customize it for you. Template Tuning convert pre-designed web sites (web templates) purchased with Template Monster or into your unique web site - they can add your own business logo, photos of your team or whatever. Just give them a brief online and leave the work up to them. This will normally cost $100 - $200 depending on the amount of work required - don’t go crazy in the beginning, get something simple together and leave the bells and whistles until later on.

5) Once you’ve got your template finished and you’re complete happy with it, go back to Rentacoder and create a new job for someone to integrate your Template with your new backend system. It’s actually fairly simple to do and you should be able to find someone to do it for about $50. Once this last step is completed, you should be ready to start using your new site. Note: We assumed that the example Real Estate Business already has a website domain to work with… if not, get Picky Domains to search for one for you, it costs $50 - but you get your money back if you aren’t happy with the suggestions. Once you’ve found something you are happy with, register the domain at Moniker and point you name servers to PAIR where you can add your domain, and email accounts.

It’s that simple - in less than a week and for under $500 you can have a brand new Real Estate website up and running. You’ve already seen how powerful outsourcing can be. As a final step, you could hire a virtual assistant to manage your business by uploading new property listings and rentals. They could even update the new website with valuable information about your team and business. Compare this with any quote from a local company and you’ll see why outsourcing, and website like Template Monster are such a valuable asset.
